Breast Augmentation

Breast enlargement, or augmentation mammoplasty, increases the fullness and size of the breasts by placing a breast implant behind the breast tissue or muscle of the chest. Breast augmentation is also used to restore a more youthful appearance to the breast in patients who have experienced a decrease in breast size after pregnancy and breast feeding. Breast augmentation can be combined with breast lift surgery (mastopexy) in patients with significant drooping or sagging of the breasts.

The implant can be inserted through an incision made in the crease under the breast, around the areola (dark tissue around the nipple), or through the armpit. The implant may be placed under the breast tissue or under the chest muscle depending on the patient's desires and anatomy. Both saline and silicone implants are available. All of these options will be explained in detail by Dr. Kreul during your consultation. Breast augmentation is performed under sedation or general anesthesia and takes 1-1.5 hours. Most patients return to routine activity within the first week but aerobic activity and strenuous upper body activity are limited for 3-4 weeks.
