Liposuction is used to remove fat from areas that do not respond to diet and exercise. Common areas benefiting from liposuction are the hips, thighs, abdomen, knees, ankles, face, neck, and arms. The best candidates for liposuction are people with good skin tone who are near normal weight but have localized fatty deposits. The result is improved abdominal contour and a more attractive shape.

During the procedure, a small hollow tube is placed through several small incisions to remove the fat via suction. Multiple areas can be suctioned at one operative setting. Bruising and swelling should be expected for several weeks postoperatively. The final result may take as long as 6-8 weeks to appreciate. A compression garment is required postoperatively to decrease swelling and speed recovery time.
